![]() Saint Valentines is less than two weeks away. The ground hogs are great pretenders and enemies of the garden. They all point to the coming of spring without any predicting or boasting. The best predictors are the frogs down by the creek bank, active birds at the feeders and robins bouncing on the lawn, tiny buds on the dogwood trees, jonquils, hyacinths and crocus, crows cawing and doves cooling. Their predictions are about as shallow as they are. Groundhogs are poor excuses for weather prophets and they are false predictors at that. Spring may arrive on March 21, but the winter could remain for weeks after that. The calendar says we have at least six more weeks of winter regardless of what Phil, the lazy groundhog, predicts. Did the rodent see his shadow or not? It really makes zero difference because we still have six more weeks of winter (and maybe even more). The day of the Groundhog is celebrated Thursday, Feb. The next program will be conducted from January through May in 2023. Beyond their initial training experience, they can attend lectures and workshops offered by state and national experts.įor anyone interested in applying to the program, the Surry County Extension Master Gardeners conduct a 13-week training program each year. Once interns have completed their initial training, Extension Master Gardeners volunteer 20 hours of their time to the community every year. These volunteers help Surry residents learn more about a myriad of gardening topics, answer questions, conduct demonstrations and workshops, and help maintain the demonstration gardens at the Historic Courthouse in Dobson. Surry County Extension has an active Extension Master Gardener program. Extension Master Gardeners Volunteers are trained to help connect North Carolinians with the reservoir of horticultural knowledge and research developed at North Carolina A&T University and NC State University. The program began in North Carolina in 1979 and has grown to 88 North Carolina counties. The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program in Surry County is looking for volunteers interested in joining the program and doing volunteer work in the community.
